"Accident" is a Misnomer; "Collision" is an Accurate, Neutral Term

New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, in a letter to New York City Council dated March 4 2013, writes about a new policy concerning use of the word "accident" in reports of vehicle events:

Not that they follow the new policy or anything.

This has been around for a long time. Back in the '70s, my driver-ed instructor told us, "A few times per year, a tree or a bridge falls on a car and someone gets hurt. Those are the only 'accidents'."

with airplanes is it 'a near miss, or a near collision'
